As much as 15% of carbon emissions in the UK come from the way people heat their homes. And 85% of UK homes rely on gas boilers to provide the heat they need. Unfortunately, the UK’s energy price rises also mean that you’re more likely to spend more money on your gas boiler, especially if it’s not energy efficient. That’s why it is important to find out if your old boiler is efficient and what efficiency level it offers.

Measuring your boiler efficiency

In most cases, boiler efficiency is measured in percentages, with higher percentages representing higher efficiency and vice versa. A 90% energy efficiency level means that 90% of your boiler’s energy goes straight into heating your home, with 10% wasted or lost as heat.

Usually, the age of a boiler is a rough indicator of its energy efficiency. Boilers 15 years and older have less energy efficiency compared to modern ones. But you can always make it more efficient with a boiler installation service or repairs to save money.

But beyond the percentages, other methods of determining a boiler’s energy efficiency are the Energy Related Products Directive (ErP) and Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers UK (SEDBUK). ErP uses the certified letter rating system, with the A+++ rating being the topmost and G representing the lowest rating. The SEDBUK rating was used before ErP and displayed boiler energy ratings in the form of percentages.

Be sure to contact an expert boiler service to get your old boiler properly serviced and reduce your bills.
